HOLLY & TYLER // NEW ZEALAND

We Hate Jetstar, But We Love Auckland.

Some weddings are worth crossing the Tasman for. Holly and Tyler’s was one of them. The flights with Jetstar were a complete fuck-up. I’ll spare you the extended airport monologue, but let’s just say Auckland had some making up to do. Fortunately, there was a very good wedding waiting at the other end.

Holly and Tyler brought together 130 guests on a family property in Auckland, and the setting was something special. A beautiful location is always appreciated by the person carrying the cameras. A beautiful location that means something to the people getting married? Even better. There’s something lovely about celebrating somewhere that already belongs to your family’s story. For this day, it became the place where everyone gathered to watch Holly and Tyler begin their next chapter. And their story has a particularly good beginning.

They met through a mutual friend, who had originally met Holly through an app for making friends after moving to a new city. Someone went looking for people to hang out with and inadvertently helped organise a future marriage. An excellent result. Probably beyond the app’s original brief. That connection eventually led here: New Zealand, a family property, 130 people, and a wedding I came home describing as the best wedding ever.

I know. A substantial claim from someone who attends quite a few. But the weddings that stay with me always come back to the people. The location gives you something beautiful to photograph. The people give you a reason to keep looking. My approach is to leave room for both. We’ll make time for portraits, and I’ll give a little direction when it helps. Then I want you back with the people you invited, enjoying the day while I pay attention.

That’s what I want these photographs to bring back for Holly and Tyler. Their people, their place, and the feeling of being right there together. Holly and Tyler, thank you for bringing me across the Tasman and trusting me with your wedding. What a privilege to be part of it.

Auckland, I’d happily come back.

Jetstar and I will need to have a separate conversation.
