Zahara & Reece’s Wedding

Smoked Garage, Brisbane

Zahara and Reece met at Domino’s. Seven years later, they were getting married with their five-month-old baby there to share it all.

That’s a pretty good outcome from a place most of us visit because we can’t be bothered cooking. Their wedding brought us to Smoked Garage in Fortitude Valley, a venue with plenty of character and a brilliant setting for photographs. With its industrial surroundings, it gave their wedding a completely different feel from the country properties and gardens I often photograph.

The day also came with an unexpected complication: the lifts were out of action following an earthquake. Of all the things you think might affect a Brisbane wedding, an earthquake is fairly far down the list. Somewhere below forgetting the rings and considerably above me voluntarily leaving my camera at home.

Thankfully, the weather was beautiful, and we were treated to a gorgeous golden sunset. Getting that soft evening light alongside the atmosphere of Smoked Garage gave us such a lovely mix of photographs. But the part I loved most about their story was the little family at the centre of it. Zahara and Reece had already spent seven years building a life together, and now they got to celebrate their marriage with their baby there too.

There’s something particularly special about those photographs. Their little one won’t remember the day, but will grow up being able to see that they were part of it.

Zahara and Reece, thank you for having me along to capture your wedding. Seven years, one beautiful baby, and a celebration with an earthquake making an entirely unsolicited contribution.

You’ve certainly got a wedding story to tell.
